Color Game

July 5, 2020

Happy 4th of July!  No color combination could be more classic than red, white&blue.

In fact, 28 countries have red, white&blue flags including the US, UK and France.  About this time of year, I'm thinking red, white&blue rooms.  If you have neutral rooms, quick accents can be added to get the look without the work of paint and upholstery.  Let's take a look.

My friend Connie has a couple of green thumbs.  The other day, she texted me a photo of some just picked artichokes and the colors took my breath away.  Turns out artichokes aren't just one color.

As you might know, I love to play my COLOR GAME in which I get inspired by an image and "decorate" a whole house using those colors.  If you're game, here's an artichoke green house  . . . with a Scandi...

I'm just gonna say it.  If life hands you lemons . . . (all together now) make lemonade.

That got me thinking of that glorious, life-affirming, happy lemony yellow  we see in nature every spring.  Everything from acacia to daffodils to forsythia.  Maybe we need more of that cheerful lemony yellow in our lives right now.  Let's see how it could look in our rooms.

Don't you love crisp white with a little barn red?  That got me thinking about a little mind game I play with any shelter magazine or on Pinterest.  It's fun to put together a whole house with an unlimited budget just using pictures.  This game can lead to all kinds of ideas you can use in your own rooms.  Are you ready to play?  To start, let's say someone gave you this little cabin.  What would you do inside?   I'd be in fav...

Classic Blue, Pantone's color for 2020,  is a great choice for the beginning of a decade.  A clear, dark blue.  Not indigo.  Not cobalt.  A Classic Blue used in interiors for decades.  As Pantone's site states, "Instilling calm, confidence, and connection, this enduring blue hue highlights our desire for a dependable and stable foundation on which to build as we cross the threshold into a new era."  That's a lot to expect from...

I'll admit it.  I've got a mad crush on those smokey, dark blues I keep seeing.  Moody and dramatic, a house full of blues would be an interesting way to live.  But where? Somewhere sunny like Palm Springs where it hit 121 on Monday?  Would dark blues make you feel cool?  If a whole house of blues seems a bit much, how about a blue single room?  Maybe a house of neutral interiors, a bit of blue here and there. Concentrated dar...

I'll admit it.  I've got a crush on "blush."  Seems like every decade, pale pinks come into our lives. This time, the color seems more intriguing than the "mauve" or "dusty pink" of the past.  A feminine, sophisticated neutral, it pairs well with almost any muted color you can imagine.  Let's take a look at some "blushing" rooms.

There's a little game I like to play that gets my creative juices flowing.  I find a picture of a house exterior and then with my "unlimited" online budget, fill it with perfectly fresh rooms.  That got me thinking - would a whole house decorated in blue&white be just too much?  Blue&White is optimistic and cheerful and lets other colors soar.  In fact, I like it so much, I write it as one word.  If you'll indulge me, let's "s...

Living Coral - Pantone's 2019 Color of the Year - is a perky, optimistic in a South-Beach kind-of-way color.  Thank goodness!  We need all the cheerfulness we can get right about now.  Just for fun, let's see if this color can work in our rooms.

Pantone describes this color :

" PANTONE 16-1546 Living Coral emits the desired, familiar and energising aspects of colour found in nature....

With the Oscar making his appearance in a few hours, let's play my favorite game of armchair decorating.  Let's say you're an actor with pockets full of movie-made cash.  Where would you live in La La Land?  Maybe somewhere a silent movie star lived in the 1920s?  In a California Spanish Colonial or a miniature Hearst Castle?  After walking through a zillion rooms on Pinterest, here's my curated 1920s creamy dreamy house and w...
