Places We Go

Hey house, you had me at pea gravel.   Looking at listings in my old Portland (OR) neighborhood, I stumbled upon this 1928 traditional house in a wonderful leafy street.   A bright yellow door, interesting windows and an amazing courtyard, filled with pea gravel.  What's not to love?  Let's take a closer look.

OK, I'll admit it.  I've fallen a little in love with the idea of a beach house.  Not any beach house but one just 20 minutes from our house here in Oakland.  What could be more fun than to have a get away just 20 minutes away?   When this nearby property came up for sale, my brain started buzzing.  Let's take a look.

Here's the little charmer in my favorite beach town, Alameda, CA.   Lis...

Right about now,  travel for fun is highly discouraged.  So why does that make me yearn for an adventure?  Here, in Oakland, we have rain - first time in 38 days - another reason why it's the perfect day to mind-trip!  If you're game, how about a quick trip to Normandy?

Just so you know, we should rent GÎTE LE CERISIER in Normandy, about 90 minutes NE of Paris.   A Dutch couple had their way with this...

Just guessing your holiday front door doesn't look anything like this.  Turns out, those British really know how to shout, HAPPY HOLIDAYS!  Let's take an armchair look at some creative decorations from London to Hayward (CA) to homes in Oregon.

I'm a big fan of Pinterest, so when Sally invited me to a Pinterest "event" at their San Francisco headquarters last weekend, I was all in.  She reserved us admission a few weeks prior to the event.  The event was a curated holiday bazaar with 38 San Francisco companies who advertise on Pinterest.

We got there an hour prior to their opening and we were first in line.  15 minutes later, there were 2 blocks of people wa...

Sometimes the best "staycations" are unexpected.  We live just 25 minutes (via BART) from San Francisco's Union Square but it's been 7 months since I've been to "the City."  So when Jayne invited me to lunch last week, I was happy to jump on BART.

Jayne and I started out at Oren's Hummus, an Israeli restaurant.  The decor is cabin chic with industrial lighting, black and white penny tiles and an outrageous chandelier.  To...

Do you love House Hunters International on HG-TV?  At our house, we take a 30-minute trip to some exotic locale a few nights a week.  Technically a "scripted reality show," it features someone who is moving to a new country.  We follow them as they tour three homes to either rent or buy.  Sometimes, it's a college student with $250 per month and other times, it's a couple with a boatload of money.  Either way, it's fun...

Do you have a little getaway?  If money were no object, my idea of a weekend place would be right in our backyard in Oakland, CA.  Nestled up against a regional part, the woods behind our house would be a perfect spot for a little vacation place.  I can imagine it near the deer path with an occasional tarantula, gopher snake or mountain lion passing by.

Here's the view of our "woods" fr...

San Pablo Avenue might not be the go-to shopping mecca for some but I get a kick out of it.  From high-end outlets to a flea market filled with rust and disrepair, could a treasure hunt for your rooms be any better?  Only 7 miles long, from Oakland, CA thru Berkeley and points north, it's scattered with stores that are well worth visiting.  Let's take a look at three of my favorites.

Some of my favorite things are on sale this weekend.  Some are just for fun like this blue garden seat ($89 at Ballard Designs).  And some are splurges.  Let's face it.  Some creature comforts are worth the investment and when they're on sale, so much the better. These products last and last and last so if you put a pencil to it, they might even be less expensive in the long run.  Let's take a look....
