Sally and I recently explored the 2026 San Francisco Decorator Showcase in Pacific Heights. I hadn't been to the annual fundraiser for 10 years and boy, has interior design changed. Maximal sytle (lots of everything in each room), ceilings painted in color, exotic wallpapers and hand-painted murals, ultra modern light fixtures and rich veined marble and onyx. I wanted to live in some rooms; in others, I wondered what were they thinking? If I had to sum up, I'd say it was an exotic yet whimsical interior.

The Queen Anne-style Victorian was built in 1897. The house has had a rough life. By 1925 and into the 1960's, it was a rooming house. In 1969, it became the family home of San Francisco architect Herb McLaughlin and was kept in the family for six decades. By the time it was offered to the showcase, it was in poor shape but much of the mill work, original floors and the 9 fireplaces were still in tack. At 9,325 sq ft, there are 7 bathrooms, a two-car garage and at least 4 bedrooms. We tried to find a place to install an elevator as new owners might require. Let's take a look at the main floor.

From the vesitbule, you enter this receiving room. Each room was decorated by a local designer.

Off the vestibule, a powder room and cloak room. The designer certainly captured Victorian opulence. Turns out, 1870-1900 was considered the peak era for installing indoor plumbing in luxury homes in San Francisco.

This designer reached to her Indian roots and contemporary design for the parlour.

The dining room is drenched (walls and ceiling in the same color) and has a floral art piece on the ceiling. When the designer first walked into the room, it was a white box. She added wood paneling, a bar and iron doors which lead into a lounge. See the panel to the right of the back doors?

The designer added a secret pantry.

Sally and I loved the barrel ceiling pantry which can be entered either from the dining room or kitchen.

Onyx (I'm guessing) counter and a hammered sink is so glam for a pantry. We loved the walls covered with artichoke and tomato vines.

A silver ceiling and shiny brass hardware (it's back!) with an ultra modern ceiling fixture. Most rooms in this house are small, especially the kitchen.

Loved to see an induction cooktop in the double oven stove unit. Currently, SF new residential projects must be all-electric but renovation, like in this house, mandatory all-electric rules are in the proposal stage.

The lounge can be entered through the kitchen or dining room's iron doors.

The small backyard was beautifully done with an outdoor kitchen and Mediterranean plantings. See you next Sunday when we explore the upper floors in this 9,325 square foot house. In the meantime, have a WONDERFUL Mother's Day!!!
