Please Note: In 2020, I wrote about this 1964 beach house when it was originally listed for sale. As of September 24, 2025, it sold in 16 days, having been completely remodeled. I've added the remodeled photos under the originals so you can see what how it turned out.
OK, I'll admit it. I've fallen a little in love with the idea of a beach house. Not any beach house but one just minutes from our house here in Oakland. What could be more fun than to have a get away just 20 minutes away? When this nearby property came up for sale, my brain started buzzing. Let's take a look.

Here's the little charmer in my favorite beach town, Alameda, CA. Listings on the San Francisco Bay beach are very rare and they're only asking $740,000. What could be done if I only had a extra million dollars?

Renovation completed and listed.

Whew! Good news - a blank slate. Bad news - everything needs to be done.

And did they do everthing!

Maybe space for an office?

An office space is exactly how it was staged.

This must be the original 1964 kitchen.

All glammed up.

Could these hardwood floors be saved?

Nope. New floors throughout.

There are two bedrooms and two baths. This one has a view of the San Francisco Bay.

A nice way to wake up.

Everything would be a total gut job.

And it was.

This bedroom has no window but access to a little courtyard. I'd use this space to expand the closet and add skylights to the bedroom.

But a guest room was more practical.

The second bathroom.

All dolled up.

View of the back of the house. As you can see, the worst house on the street.

Fantastic!

A private beach was added to the back of the house.

The backyard - oodles of possibilities.

Perfect for entertaining.

View to the south. I believe this path is part of the 500 mile San Francisco Bay Trail.

Bringing in sand was smart.

View to the north. That's the San Francisco skyline on the far right. In 2020, just after the original house was listed, I envisaged a bit of a lower brow yet dreamy beach house. Let's take a look at "my" more simple cottage.

I'd design the front of house like this - an updated beach shack.

The front entry sets the tone.

And in the back, a simple back deck. Let the views speak for themselves. That's it. Nothing too fancy. I'd try to vault the ceilings and shiplap all the walls. Since I'm just dreaming, I'm not worried about replacing windows & doors, HVAC, the dry rot and termites, adding a new roof and exterior, landscaping etc. I hope you'll agree that it's sure fun to dream.

To recap, in 2020, the house (mostly in original condition) was listed for $740,000 yet sold for $955,000. Five years later and fully remodeled, the property is pending (16 days after listing). Was listed for $1,095,00. In September, 2025, someone got a little gem. Enjoy your Sunday!
