My mom's favorite Mother's Day gift was a 180 from receiving flowers. Each year, she asked for cow manure for her rose beds. In the early '60's, we'd make a day out of it as my dad hitched up a little trailer to our car. Our family would drive out to the local dairy. With a pitch fork, Dad would load the trailer as my brother and I ran around trying to pet cows. When we got home, Dad dropped a shovelful at the base of each rose bush. My mom spent the next few days mixing in the manure with the soil. I'm sure Dad was relieved the year the dairy started a delivery service
