Color Game : Fall Color

Autumn snuck in last Thursday and there's a feeling of fall in the air here in Oakland, CA. Since it's my favorite season, I was ready to start bringing fall and those autumnal colors inside despite being 90 degrees outside. In our entry way, a few stems of artificial (am I admitting to this?) fall leaves.

I would love the real thing but they won't be in my yard til December. That white vase was yellow and orange until last weekend when it is got a spray of flat white paint. Add moss balls and I was in business. Here's some quick ways to decorate your rooms.

An enlarged snapshot from my phone in a $10 thrift store frame. Here's how it looks in our living room.

Living room looking into entry way. Sunflower photo on the wall, dark green velvet pillow covers and inserts from IKEA.

View from sunroom into the living room. Our friend, Hal, was sitting on the couch one night and asked what that thing was behind the TV. "It's a painting," I said. "Huh," he replied. I chuckled that the corner looked bare and I wanted something to mimic the wall on the other side of the fireplace. I bought a canvas, painted it with left over kitchen cabinet paint and the edges and a freehand stripe across the canvas in gold. I thought it looked cool but now I'm having my doubts.

The fireplace mantel looked like the top photo yesterday and the bottom is how it is today. I stayed away from moss balls all summer (they're like catnip to me) but once there was that hint of fall in the air, those moss ball were out. But this morning, there were too many moss balls. That green ginger jar (from Connie) is filled with Turkey Buzzard feathers found on our deck. All will change when those little pumpkins are in the markets.

This was supposed to be our dining room but since we have an eat-in kitchen, it's become our "sun room" (for lack of a better word) to sit to watch the hills beyond.

Ballard Designs indoor/outdoor carpet - watch for end of season sales (which should be coming up soon). Alameda Flea Market shutters and little table (spray painted flat white) and homemade faux fur pillow covers.

In the sun room, urns are filled with wicker and trimmed with a leaf garland.

A treasured little painting from my mother's house. Thank you, Kim, for sending to me.

For everyday meals, we've begun using IKEA's oversize olive green paper napkins. Easy peasy. A few accents in fall colors and you, too, will be feeling fall-ish. Here's to finding autumn - whether you go all out or just a bit here and there, change is in the air.
