Sometimes the best "staycations" are unexpected. We live just 25 minutes (via BART) from San Francisco's Union Square but it's been 7 months since I've been to "the City." So when Jayne invited me to lunch last week, I was happy to jump on BART.
Jayne and I started out at Oren's Hummus, an Israeli restaurant. The decor is cabin chic with industrial lighting, black and white penny tiles and an outrageous chandelier. To say it's oversized is an understatement. It didn't seem to belong to the decor at all which makes it audacious and downright fun.
Other oversized industrial lighting at Oren's.
A colorful lunch of chicken, tabouli and pickled vegetables, served with warm, housemade pita. Delish! Oren's Hummus is at 71 3rd Street, a few blocks from Union Square.
After lunch, we walked over to the super luxe Samuel Scheur Linens. Thick, soft towels come in 60 different colors. As per their website, "Abyss Habidecor's 700 gram Super Pile is the world’s only towel made of 100% extra-long staple Giza 88 and Giza 92 Egyptian cotton. This cotton is cultivated along the banks of the Nile, picked by hand, and woven in three directions: warp, weft, and pile." Whew. Bath towels are $83.
The plush Larry Rug ($175 - $332) is woven 3 stripes at a time. Samuel Scheur is at 340 Sutter.
As a "palate cleanser" to all the color of lunch and linens, we headed to Macy's bedding department. Loved this quilt from Macy's Hotel Collection - Classic White Matelasse. Regular price is $420, on sale through today for $199 (queen). Macy's Union Square is at 170 O'Farrell St.
Our final stop was ONE65 Patisserie & Boutique with an unbelievably colorful 24 flavors of macarons. We'll be back to explore all 6 floors of casual and fine dining of this historic French Beaux Arts building. ONE65 is at 165 O’Farrell Street in San Francisco.
Jayne and I shared a lemon mouse tart, as delicious as it looks. Sitting on the sidewalk at a small marble table and in French wicker chairs, we felt like we were in Paris on this blue sky afternoon. Just then, a French speaking couple sat down next to us - and voilà - the complete Parisian experience. From San Francisco to Israel to Paris, all in an afternoon.
There's still time for a day staycation this summer. Wherever it takes you, keep your eyes peeled for fun decorating ideas. I'd love for you to keep me posted!
