I'm a big fan of Pinterest, so when Sally invited me to a Pinterest "event" at their San Francisco headquarters last weekend, I was all in.  She reserved us admission a few weeks prior to the event.  The event was a curated holiday bazaar with 38 San Francisco companies who advertise on Pinterest.

We got there an hour prior to their opening and we were first in line.  15 minutes later, there were 2 blocks of people wa...

When I  published this article in 2016, I was excited about getting my clothes so organized. This March, my "lifestyle" drastically changed as I no longer had to dress for the corporate world. Now, 8 months later, I find myself wondering why those suits are still hanging in my closet.  I'm republishing this article in hopes of inspiring myself to get my closet in sync with the life I now lead.  I'm hoping it's not just filled...

Don't you love a score?  I'm all excited about this $10 gold frame (4' x 3') found at a rather permanent flea market in Berkeley, CA.  Kicking out the battered plexiglass and dusting it off the best I could, I could hardly wait to get it home.  Looks like it has a bad case of premature aging due to the weather but the patina is perfect.  The linen interior frame was nasty but a quick coat of flat black paint fixed that. Now t...

Happy Halloween!  It's actual scary around here as  a once-in-a-decade "wind event" is due in Northern California over the weekend.  There's a good chance we won't have electrical power as you're reading this.  Hopefully, some wind fires will be prevented.

To cope, I'm rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.  Maybe these little fall vignettes will prompt you to do the same.  In my office cabinet,...

Have you fallen in love with Washi tape?  This repositional paper tape packs a wallop of design into a small roll of tape.  Big and bold like this chevron patterned wall or the thinnest of line where the ceiling meet the wall, uses for Washi tape are limitless.  Let's take a look.

As we get closer to the holidays, I was thinking of affordable projects anyone could do in a day or two - just in time to show off to holiday guests.  What about updating a staircase? Ours is covered with carpet so we're a bit stuck, but that doesn't mean I can't dream. Don't you love this trompe l'oeil black runner?  It's amazing what an impact a little paint makes. Let's take a look at the impact of just changing the risers...

There's lots of reasons why we might not be looking up right about now, but maybe it's time.  Literally.  How about a ceiling makeover?  While there are ton of decorative options, including the above tin panel, let's look at some ceiling makeovers using a gallon or two of plain old paint.  It's hard to imagine how different these rooms would look if they each had a plain white ceiling.

This Happy Hour uses a glass cloche - perfect for small autumn vignette.  Little collectables fit under a glass dome and natural objects look even more special.  You might have a glass dome in your pantry - a cheese dome, a cake stand cover, a Mason jar, a glass canister turned upside down.  If you don't have a base, you can use a book, a plate, a piece of wood or just sit it on a surface.  Cloches / bell jars / glass domes ar...

Are you falling for fall?  Come Monday, it's officially autumn.  Cozy sweaters, comforting soups and roaring fireplaces might have to wait as it's sunny and 82 degrees here in Oakland, California.  What can happen is tweaking our rooms to reflect that change of seasons we're feeling.  Above, our mantel this fall.  Just got this little wheat sheaf at HomeGoods ($12). The white bowl is from the 99 Cents...

Don't you love this headboard covered in charming "love bird" wallpaper?    Decorative headboards date back to ancient Egypt.  Still today, a headboard completes a bedroom and adds to the personality of our rooms.  Here's some fresh, quirky and inexpensive ways to make our beds look great.
